Background of the study
Digital entrepreneurship has emerged as a transformative force in modern economies, reshaping business landscapes and creating new avenues for social mobility. In Lagos State, the rapid expansion of digital technologies and the increasing penetration of the internet have catalyzed a surge in entrepreneurial activities, particularly among young innovators and tech-savvy individuals. Digital startups are not only driving economic growth but are also providing opportunities for individuals from diverse socio-economic backgrounds to improve their living standards and achieve upward mobility (Adebayo, 2023). The digital economy facilitates access to global markets, innovative business models, and scalable solutions that overcome traditional barriers to entry. This democratization of entrepreneurship fosters a more inclusive economic environment, allowing traditionally marginalized groups to participate in wealth creation and social transformation. Despite these promising developments, challenges such as inadequate digital infrastructure, limited access to funding, and skill gaps persist, hindering the full potential of digital entrepreneurship to drive social mobility (Oluwaseun, 2024). This study aims to examine the impact of digital entrepreneurship on social mobility in Lagos State, analyzing how digital platforms and innovative business practices contribute to economic empowerment and social change.
Statement of the problem
While digital entrepreneurship in Lagos State has opened new pathways for economic advancement, significant barriers remain that limit its effectiveness in promoting social mobility. Challenges such as insufficient access to venture capital, gaps in technical and business skills, and digital infrastructure deficiencies create disparities in entrepreneurial success. These issues prevent many aspiring entrepreneurs from fully capitalizing on digital opportunities, thereby restricting their upward social mobility. Furthermore, there is a lack of comprehensive research on how these digital ventures influence social stratification and whether they provide sustainable solutions for marginalized communities (Babatunde, 2023). Addressing these challenges is critical to understanding and maximizing the role of digital entrepreneurship as a tool for social change.
